WHORTLEBERRIES - BILBERRIES - BLAEBERRIESVaccinium myrtillus (Lat.)Out in the forest in May - the flowers of the small bushes of the wild Nordic blueberry. The flowers are round and rosecolored. There are many names in English for this plant in my dictionary (whortleberry, blaeberry, bilberry, blueberry). The bushes are about 25 centimetres high (10 inches). I hope the bumble bees are diligent so we will get lots of berries when we are in August. The harvest of wild berries in the Swedish forests is very important. In August the berries are ripe in Hälsingland. In September, when there have been some nights of frost, the ground in the forests often is covered by whortleberry wire with multicoloured frostbitten small leaves. Photo © Ingegerd Text May 2004
