LINGON
The red gold of the forestIn our forests you often find the cowberry twigs. They are green all year round. The red berries, lingon, are ripe in September. Those are called "the red gold of the forest" as they are so useful and have been of great importance in the household in the country household. You use those berries for preserves and drinks. Lingon preserve is very common in Swedish plain food, for instance meat balls with lingon preserve or black pudding with lingon preserve. You can easily make your own preserve. Boil the berries with sugar and water or just grind them with sugar.
Lingon growing everywhere in the rough terrain of the Hälsinglandish forest. The red berries are sitting in flocks. The tiny plants with leathery leaves are flowering in June with clock-like white flowers. (Natural size) When harvesting lingon we prefer to use a special tool, "barplockare".
