Berries in Sweden

We can get many edible things in our Swedish forests. Thanks to the custumary law of The Public Access in Swedish Nature we are allowed to pick berries and mushrooms nearly everywhere in our forests.
Economically "lingon" (cowberries) and blueberries are the most important species.

Of old it has been a good way to enrich the food with vitamins to pick the berries which are so richly supplied in the forests and meadows. Like those berries which are grown in the gardens you can use them fresh or keep them frozen or you can make jam, "saft" or marmelade.

There are many kinds of wild berries, some of them you can find all over our country, some are regional.

Here are some of the wild berries you can find in Sweden. Some of those are hardly used in the household nowadays but their value lies in that they supply the nonmigratory birds with food during late autumn and winter.

In the gardens the most commonly grown berries are strawberries (Fragaria ananassa L), garden raspberries (Rubus idaeus L), black currants (Ribes nigrum L), red currants (Ribes rubrum L) and gooseberries (Ribes uva-crispa L).
The fruit trees you often see in the gardens around the villas are apple, pear, plum and cherry trees.
Rhubarb isn't a fruit but I have a recipe page
